What is Archie?
Archie was developed to provide information for distributed computers. In the 1980s, American Universities used FTP to connect their computers. Alan Emtage Peter Deutsch Bill Heelan created a searchable database to make it easier for users to find the files they wanted.
Emtage Heelan Deutsch wrote a search script for McGill University Montreal Canada, on the 10th of September 1990. It was released in the form of a program that downloaded directory listings from public anonymous FTP sites, enabling the creation of a database of file names that could be searched.
The name Archie comes from the word "archive" but is not related to a popular comic character. It is still often associated with comics.
