Fully Qualified Names - What they are and How to Use Them

An FQDN, or fully qualified domain name, is an Internet identifier that can be used to identify either a site or computer. The FQDN is used to do everything from install SSL certificates to access remote hosts. Also, they can be used to connect and identify individual domain services or protocols.

Fully qualified domain names explained

The fully qualified domain name is an Internet address that includes both a hostname (or subdomain) and a domain. The hostname specifies the service, protocol or subdomain, and the domain name is the last segment of the FQDN, often referred to as the top level domain (TLD).

Examples of Fully Qualified Domain Names

As an example, a FQDN could be a name for a website such as "cloudns.net". A FQDN may have more than one hostname, since many different services or protocols are offered under the same domain. The hostname is either a short name, like "mail.cloudns.net,"or a long term, like "cloudns.net/mail."

FQDNs can be expressed using a period or a dot. Although, with modern browsers this is no longer required. FQDNs are read right to left because that is how computers interpret domains.

When resolving FQDNs the DNS server will check its database of names and contact any hosts that match the given address. The DNS server looks up the specified hostname within its DNS table to translate it into an IP address.

This is known as a PQDN. For example, if you want to access a server using SSH on the internet, then the FQDN of the machine should be "hostname[.]d[.]ethz[.]ch."

Why is it important to have a fully qualified domain name?

FQDNs play a key role in Internet connectivity. Without them, your website and any other computer or device on the Internet wouldn't be able to be recognized by your network or the rest of the world. Also, they're the key to getting a SSL certificate for your site. This secures a link between a client and server.

FQDNs can have many uses, and they go well beyond just connecting your website to the Internet. It's also important to connect and identify remote computers.

Identifying an FQDN with your browser

A FQDN is a numerical code that your computer understands and uses to take you to the right website or online content. In the same way, your email is a numerical address that your email program understands and uses in order to send you email.

FQDNs play an important role when obtaining SSL certificates. These secure connections between ecommerce sites and the browsers of their customers. SSL certificates are only granted to specific websites that have the FQDN. Businesses that deal with sensitive financial information or handle sensitive personal data must use the FQDN.

Yes! If you've read this far, you should now know how to create a website.

Now that you are familiar with how to create a website's structure, you will also need to be familiar with HTML and CSS programming.

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It's like creating a recipe for a dish. You'd list ingredients, instructions, and directions. Similarly, HTML tells a computer which parts of text appear bold, italicized, underlined, or linked to another part of the document. It is the language used to describe documents.

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. Think of it like a style sheet for recipes. Instead of listing every ingredient and instructions, you create general rules about font sizes, colors, spacing and other details.

HTML tells the browser what HTML is and CSS tells it how.

You don't have to be a prodigy if you don’t get the terms. Follow the tutorials and you will soon be creating beautiful websites.
